Who it is for

Aromatherapy massage suits almost everyone, but it is especially welcome when life has felt relentless and you simply need to slow down. It is a gentle yet effective way to reconnect with your body.

  • Anyone carrying tension in the shoulders, neck or back from desk work or daily stress
  • Those who struggle to switch off, sleep poorly or feel mentally overstretched
  • Clients who want a calming, sensory treatment rather than a deep, intensive one
  • People looking to balance their mood and lift low energy
  • Anyone wanting a little dedicated time to themselves, free from screens and demands
  • First-time massage clients who would like a soothing, accessible introduction

Why choose aromatherapy massage

Aromatherapy massage pairs flowing, rhythmic massage strokes with the natural properties of essential oils, so you receive the benefits of skilled hands and the calming influence of aroma at the same time. The result is a treatment that feels indulgent yet purposeful, working on both physical tension and mental wellbeing.

Essential oils are absorbed through the skin and experienced through the sense of smell, which is closely linked to the parts of the brain involved in mood and relaxation. This is why an aromatherapy massage can feel so settling — it gently encourages the whole nervous system to unwind rather than simply easing muscles in isolation.

At By Shiva, we take the time to understand how you are feeling on the day and select an oil blend to match, whether you are after something grounding and calming or light and uplifting. Every treatment is tailored, unhurried and carried out in a warm, private setting.

How it works

Your therapist begins with a brief, friendly consultation to understand how you are feeling and any areas of tension, then selects an essential-oil blend suited to your needs and preferences. The chosen oils are warmed and worked into the skin using smooth, flowing massage techniques across the body.

The pressure stays soft to medium throughout — the aim is to soothe and release rather than to work deeply into muscle knots. As the massage progresses, the warmth of the oils, the aroma and the steady rhythm of the strokes guide both body and mind into a calmer, more relaxed state.

Your appointment, step by step

From the moment you arrive, every part of the experience is designed to feel calm, private and unrushed.

  1. You are welcomed into the clinic and shown to a warm, quiet treatment room, with time to settle in.
  2. Your therapist carries out a short consultation, asking how you feel and whether you have any areas of particular tension or oils you prefer to avoid.
  3. An essential-oil blend is selected and prepared to suit your mood and needs for the day.
  4. You undress to your comfort and lie on the heated couch, covered with towels for privacy and warmth throughout.
  5. The full-body massage is carried out using flowing strokes and the warmed oil blend, with pressure adjusted to your comfort.
  6. You are given a few moments to come round gently at the end before being offered water and easing back into your day.

In the treatment room

The room is kept warm, softly lit and calm, with comfortable towels and a heated couch so you can relax completely. From the first stroke you will notice the gentle aroma of the oils filling the space, while the steady, rhythmic movements of the massage encourage your breathing to slow and your shoulders to drop.

Most clients find their thoughts quieten and a deep sense of ease takes over — some drift close to sleep. Your therapist works at an unhurried pace and checks in on pressure and comfort, so you can simply let go and enjoy the experience without a thing to think about.

What to expect afterwards

The benefits of aromatherapy massage are felt immediately and can continue gently in the hours and days that follow.

  • Straight after: a calm, lighter feeling, with tension eased and the mind noticeably quieter
  • That evening: many clients enjoy a deeper, more restful night's sleep
  • The next day: muscles often feel looser and more supple, with a lasting sense of wellbeing
  • Over time: regular sessions can help you manage everyday stress and keep tension from building

Aftercare

A few simple steps will help you make the most of your treatment and prolong that relaxed feeling.

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the rest of the day to stay hydrated
  • Allow the oils to absorb fully — leave a few hours before bathing or showering if you can
  • Avoid alcohol and heavy meals for the rest of the day
  • Take it easy where possible and avoid strenuous exercise immediately afterwards
  • Rest and enjoy the calm — an early night will help you feel the full benefit
  • Book in regularly if you would like to keep stress and tension at bay

Safety and suitability

Aromatherapy massage is suitable for most people and does not require a patch test. However, please let us know in advance if you are pregnant, have any allergies or sensitivities to essential oils, have a skin condition, or are managing any medical condition, as some essential oils are not recommended during pregnancy or alongside certain conditions and we will adjust your blend accordingly.

If you are unwell, have a fever, an active skin infection or a recent injury, we may ask you to rearrange your appointment. If you have any health concerns, we are always happy to talk things through before booking so we can ensure the treatment is right for you.

Frequently asked questions

Anything we have not covered? Call 07544 154415 or email and we will get back to you the same day.

Do I need a patch test before an aromatherapy massage? +
No, a patch test is not required for this treatment. We do ask that you let us know about any allergies or sensitivities to essential oils beforehand so we can select a suitable blend for you.
How long does the treatment take? +
An aromatherapy massage takes approximately 60 minutes. We recommend allowing a little extra time so you can arrive unhurried and ease back into your day gently afterwards.
Will I be sore afterwards? +
Aromatherapy massage uses soft to medium pressure and is designed to soothe rather than work deeply into the muscles, so soreness is uncommon. Most clients leave feeling relaxed, light and refreshed.
Can I have an aromatherapy massage while pregnant? +
Some essential oils are not recommended during pregnancy, so please tell us in advance if you are expecting. We will discuss your options and, where appropriate, choose a suitable blend or recommend an alternative treatment.
How often should I have an aromatherapy massage? +
This is entirely up to you. Many clients enjoy a session monthly to manage ongoing stress, while others book in whenever they feel they need to unwind. Your therapist is happy to advise on what might suit you.
What should I do after my massage? +
Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and strenuous activity for the rest of the day, and try to leave the oils to absorb before showering. Taking it easy will help you enjoy the calming benefits for longer.
