Is underarm laser right for you?
Underarm laser hair removal suits women who want to step away from the endless cycle of shaving, plucking and waxing, and enjoy reliably smooth skin instead.
- You are tired of shaving every few days or the discomfort of regular waxing
- You experience ingrown hairs, irritation or razor bumps under the arms
- You want a long-term reduction in hair growth rather than a temporary fix
- You have a busy schedule and want to simplify your routine
- You have any skin tone from fair to deep — the GentleMax Pro Plus® is safe across Fitzpatrick I-VI
- You are ready to commit to a course of sessions for the best, longest-lasting outcome
Why choose By Shiva for underarm laser
The underarm is one of the most rewarding areas to treat. It is a small, contained zone where hair tends to be dense and dark, which means it responds particularly well to laser. With each session you can expect to see hair grow back finer, sparser and slower, until the daily upkeep becomes a thing of the past.
We use the Candela GentleMax Pro Plus®, a dual-wavelength system combining Alexandrite and Nd-YAG lasers. This allows us to tailor the treatment safely and effectively to your individual skin tone, including deeper complexions, which older single-wavelength devices often could not treat well. Built-in contact cooling protects and soothes the skin throughout.
At By Shiva, every course begins with a proper consultation and patch test, so your treatment is matched to you rather than a one-size-fits-all setting. Our calm, premium clinic in Whetstone is staffed by trained practitioners who take the time to make you feel comfortable and informed.
How underarm laser hair removal works
The laser emits precisely controlled pulses of light that are absorbed by the pigment in the hair. This energy converts to heat, which disables the follicle and reduces its ability to produce new hair. Because the laser targets actively growing hairs, and your hairs cycle through growth phases at different times, a course of treatments is needed to catch each follicle at the right stage.
This is why a single session smooths and reduces, but a full course delivers genuine long-term hair reduction. The integrated contact cooling on the GentleMax Pro Plus® keeps the surface of the skin comfortable as the energy reaches the follicle beneath.
Your appointment, step by step
Underarm sessions are quick and straightforward. Here is what to expect from start to finish.
- We confirm your patch test results and check in on your skin, recent sun exposure and any changes since your last visit.
- You will be given protective eyewear, and the underarm area is cleansed and prepared. Hair should be shaved the day before, so the follicle is intact beneath the surface but no hair sits on top.
- Your practitioner adjusts the GentleMax Pro Plus® settings to suit your skin tone and hair type, then glides the cooled applicator across each underarm.
- You will feel a quick warm snap with each pulse, eased by the contact cooling. Treating both underarms takes only a few minutes.
- We finish by soothing the skin and applying a calming product, then talk you through aftercare and book your next session in the course.
What it feels like in the room
Most clients describe the sensation as a quick, warm flick against the skin, a little like the snap of an elastic band, followed immediately by the cooling burst from the device. The underarm can be a slightly more sensitive area than some, but because it is so small the treatment is over in moments, and the contact cooling keeps things very manageable.
Our treatment room is calm and private, and your practitioner will keep you informed throughout. There is no need to rush — the appointment is unhurried even though the laser work itself is brief, and you can return to your day straight afterwards.
What results to expect
Laser hair removal is a gradual process, and your underarms will keep improving across the course. Here is a realistic timeline.
- After 1 session: hair grows back slower and you may notice patchy shedding over the following weeks.
- After 2-3 sessions: a visible thinning, with regrowth that is finer and sparser between visits.
- After a course of 6: significant long-term hair reduction, with far less and lighter regrowth.
- Sessions are typically spaced 4-6 weeks apart to match the hair growth cycle.
- Occasional top-up sessions may be recommended over time to maintain your results.
Caring for your skin afterwards
The underarms may feel a little warm or look slightly pink for a short while. A few simple steps keep them comfortable and protect your results.
- Avoid hot showers, saunas, steam rooms and vigorous exercise for 24-48 hours.
- Skip deodorant, perfumed products and harsh exfoliants on the area for a day or two.
- Keep the skin moisturised and treat it gently while it settles.
- Do not wax, pluck or thread between sessions — shaving only, as the root must stay intact.
- Apply SPF if the area will see sun, and avoid sunbeds throughout your course.
- If any redness lingers, a cool compress and a soothing balm will help.
Safety and suitability
A patch test is required 24-48 hours before your first session. This lets us check how your skin responds to the laser and fine-tune the settings, so your first full treatment is both safe and comfortable. The GentleMax Pro Plus® is suitable across all skin tones, Fitzpatrick I-VI, thanks to its dual wavelengths and contact cooling.
Laser is not suitable during pregnancy, and certain medications, skin conditions or recent sun exposure and tanning may mean we postpone or adjust treatment. Please tell us about any medical history or medications at your consultation so we can advise you properly. We will always put your safety first.
