How it works
The laser delivers controlled pulses of light energy that are absorbed by the pigment in the hair. That energy is converted to heat, which disrupts the follicle and slows its ability to produce new hair. Because hair grows in cycles, only follicles in their active growth phase respond fully to each session, which is why a course of treatments spaced several weeks apart is needed to work through every cycle.
The Candela GentleMax Pro Plus® pairs each pulse with a burst of contact cooling, protecting the surface of the skin and keeping the sensation comfortable. Your practitioner selects the wavelength and settings to suit your skin tone and hair type, ensuring a safe, effective treatment across the precise area you want refined.
Your appointment, step by step
From arrival to aftercare, here's what a beard line session looks like at By Shiva.
- We begin with a quick review of your skin, your goals and any changes since your last visit, and confirm your patch test was clear before a first session.
- Together we mark the exact line and zones to be treated, so the area refined is precisely where you want it and your desired beard shape is preserved.
- The skin is cleansed and shaved if needed, and you're given protective eyewear to shield your eyes from the laser.
- Your practitioner glides the Candela handpiece across the treatment area, delivering cooled pulses of light. A short beard line session takes around 20 minutes.
- We soothe the treated skin and apply a calming product, then talk you through aftercare for the next 24-48 hours.
- Before you leave, we book your next session to keep you on the optimal four-to-six-week schedule.
In the treatment room
Most men describe each laser pulse as a quick, warm snap, often likened to a light flick of an elastic band, immediately followed by the cool touch of the contact cooling. The neck and jaw can be a little more sensitive than other areas, but the treatment is brief and very manageable, and your practitioner checks in with you throughout.
Afterwards the treated skin may look slightly pink and feel warm, much like mild sunburn. This typically settles within a few hours. The room is calm and private, and there's no need to set aside recovery time, so you can return to your day straight away.
Results timeline
Laser hair reduction is a gradual process. Here's what to expect across your course.
- First 1-2 weeks: treated hairs shed naturally as the disrupted follicles let go.
- After 2-3 sessions: the beard line looks cleaner and regrowth comes in finer and slower.
- Sessions 4-6: noticeably reduced density, with edges far easier to keep sharp between visits.
- After a full course: long-term hair reduction in the treated zones and significantly less daily shaving.
- Ongoing: occasional top-up sessions may help maintain your defined line over time.
Aftercare
A little care over the first day or two keeps your skin calm and your results on track.
- Avoid hot showers, saunas, steam rooms and intense exercise for 24-48 hours.
- Keep the area out of direct sun and apply a broad-spectrum SPF daily to treated skin.
- Skip perfumed products, aftershave and harsh exfoliants on the area for a couple of days.
- Don't pick, scratch or wax the treated zone; let shed hairs fall away naturally.
- Apply any soothing product recommended by your practitioner to calm warmth or pinkness.
- Avoid sunbeds and fake tan throughout your course of treatment.
Safety and suitability
A patch test is required 24-48 hours before your first session. This lets us confirm how your skin responds to the laser and select the safest, most effective settings for your skin tone and hair type. The Candela GentleMax Pro Plus® is suitable for all skin tones (Fitzpatrick I-VI), and its contact cooling helps protect the skin throughout treatment.
Laser hair removal isn't suitable for everyone. It's best avoided if you're using certain photosensitising medications, have active skin infections, cold sores or breakouts in the treatment area, or a recent tan or sunburn. Please let us know about any medications, skin conditions or recent sun exposure at your consultation so we can advise you properly. Laser delivers long-term hair reduction rather than permanent removal, and individual results vary.
